One year later, I’m still standing with Wendy

wendy davisOne year ago today, state Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) stood in front of Texas lawmakers and delivered a nearly 13-hour filibuster. She stood on the floor for that length of time without food or bathroom breaks, wearing a back brace and hot pink Mizuno Women’s Wave Rider running shoes, to filibuster a draconian anti-abortion bill that has shut down more than a dozen abortion clinics in the state so far.

Though her filibuster was successful for that day, the Texas legislature passed the bill less than a month later during a special session called by Governor Rick Perry for just that purpose. The law requires all first-trimester abortion clinics to become ambulatory surgical centers (or mini-hospitals), restricts access to medication abortions, requires all doctors to have admitting privileges at a local hospital, and prohibits abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. At the time of the bill’s passage, 36 women’s health clinics provided abortions, but 14 have since closed. All but six are expected to close or stop offering abortions by September, when the law goes fully into effect, leaving massive swaths of the state with no abortion providers at all.

Thousands were at the capitol on June 25, 2013 to support Senator Davis. That support led to her declaring her candidacy for Texas Governor In October, 2013. Since Rick Perry will not be seeking re-election, Senator Davis is running against Perry’s attorney general, Greg Abbott.

Davis will commemorate the one-year filibuster anniversary with her running mate, lieutenant governor candidate Leticia Van de Putte (D) TONIGHT at the Palmer Event Center. The event is expected to draw thousands to Austin to STAND WITH WENDY!

The pink shoes Wendy wore during the filibuster sparked a sales boom and abortion debate on Amazon.

Funny, insightful reviews lit up Amazon’s review pages! Here’s what some buyers had to say about them:

”Do you believe in human rights? Do you think a women’s health is a matter for her and her doctor and not for aged religious fundamentalists? Then these are the shoes for you! They will carry you through a marathon and a 13-hour filibuster necessary to protect women from the bigotry and religious intolerance in Texas. Highly recommended for progressive feet!”

“Great shoes for STANDING UP for your rights! Stylish, sturdy, forthright, very smart. The ethical and moral choice! All sizes and colors (Rouge Red/Apple Green highly recommended). Stand, walk, run! These shoes are even better for MARCHING! Rosa sat; Wendy stood; we’re Marching Forward! Put in that extra mile in our shoes and women will surely win!”

“If you are looking for a shoe that will never yield to the floor, pressure or good ol’ fashioned boy’s club bullying this is the shoe for you. It has been tested for hours, opportunities to yield to oppression were presented yet this shoe stayed firmly in place holding up half the sky for 13 hours.”

“These are the perfect shoes for standing your ground against misogyny, ignorance, and deliberate stupidity. The cushioning will support you through marathons or filibusters, and the jazzy pink color will remind your opponents that you have style as well as substance. I highly recommend these shoes for those who want to fight sexism and reproductive tyranny by standing firm, kicking a little good ol’ boy ass, and claiming your rights as a an American and a woman.”
